"Heartless" is the second single off Kanye West's upcoming album "808s & Heartbreak". Much like the first single from the album, "Love Lockdown", the song features Auto-Tune-processed vocals. It samples "Ammonia Avenue" by The Alan Parsons Project. The song was performed for the first time at the ONE Campaign concert during the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.
This is the first single by West to appear under the genre "Pop Art". West describes 808s & Heartbreak as "Pop Art", though the previous single, "Love Lockdown," appears under "Hip-Hop/Rap". This song was featured on the 10th episode of 90210 entitled "Games People Play" which aired on October 11, 2008.
The music video was directed by Hype Williams and uses the rotoscoping animation technique, which West claims was inspired by the 1981 animated film American Pop, where a vast amount of character animations were traced over live-action footage.
